How can you motivate young people to be active civic participants? Teacher panelists join other leaders for this dynamic virtual event on the ways that applying media literacy skills and exploring public service careers can inspire civic engagement.

This event draws on the partnership and resources of SRVCE (Supporting Readiness through Vital Civic Empowerment), a free, highly adaptable high school civics curriculum (srvce.edc.org). Presenters will demonstrate how civic learning experiences can help young people explore community issues and find their voice, while illustrating SRVCE themes such as Duty & Service, Dialogue & Respect, and Change & Impact.

Educators who co-designed SRVCE will present alongside leaders from partner organizations including Education Development Center (EDC), National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE), and StoryCorps, as well as SRVCE funder US Department of Defense. Event attendees will have the chance to bring their needs and perspectives into the conversation to learn new ways to integrate civic learning into core content areas and boost student engagement.

Event Learning Goals:

  • Understand the importance of media literacy and the value of public service career exploration to advancing civic participation.
  • Explore key themes of civic participation and how to make them relevant to young people.
  • Consider how to integrate civic learning into various core content, from social studies to STEM.
