The Road to the 19th Amendment: Examining the Women’s Suffrage Movement during the Reconstruction Era with Historical Empathy Pedagogies

How do challenges to voting still exist?

This webinar will provide a pedagogical approach to promote historical empathy through document analysis of the intersections of race and gender in the debate for women’s suffrage during the Reconstruction Era. Using the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework (2013) C3 Framework Inquiry Arc and Inquiry Design Model, we will use primary sources that highlight various perspectives about suffragists, women of color, white women, and Black men thorough examination of the compelling question, “do challenges to vote still exist?” Documents highlighted in this webinar will demonstrate how practitioners can foster historical empathy when teaching the complexities of the women’s suffrage movement during the Reconstruction Era by engaging students in communicating conclusions and taking informed action about the historical and contemporary issues of voting rights.
