The Ken Burns Classroom Collection on PBS LearningMedia offers hundreds of standards-aligned classroom lessons based on films by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, and their collaborators, including The Civil WarThe Roosevelts, The West, The Vietnam War, and many more. This webinar will showcase inquiry-based strategies for integrating documentary film clips and primary sources into instruction. You will hear from experienced educators who have developed lesson materials for the collection, and implemented the lessons in their classrooms. Participants will emerge inspired with new ideas for how to effectively integrate film and primary sources into instruction, and knowledge about how to access a wealth of documentary film content across eras and topics to implement these strategies.

Presenters:

Cora Davis

Former militant, angry protester turned reconciler, Cora Davis' life has been transformed by the principles of nonviolence. She taught middle school students that their voices matter by fighting for her own and she has created an effective after school (and weekend and lunch hour and anytime) club for the “at risk” students otherwise falling through the cracks of the system. She believes a willingness to look at ourselves first is the key to bringing unity to the hurting world around her and is now convinced we cannot fight hate if it is in us, no matter how justified it is. She’s a mentor program director in Fayette County, Georgia. She loves music, poetry, art and justice. She hates a boring classroom and looks for opportunities everyday to teach students how they can make a positive impact in the world around them.

Nicole Dobronski

Nicole Dobronski (she/her) hails from Kansas City, but grew up in rural area in Southern Illinois, across the river from St. Louis. She has taught for 11 years, most of which has been spent teaching American history to 7th and 8th graders. Nicole has helped modernize her district's curriculum with a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion lens, and takes great pride in providing an inclusive space for all in her classroom and with her lessons. Her desire to build a better, equitable future for all through empathetic, engaged citizens is at the heart of why she teaches. She holds a Bachelor and a Master of Science in Education and has taught 5th through 8th graders across all core contents but math. Nicole believes that through education, we can build a better and more accepting future for all through a mixture of citizenship and empathy. She lives with her husband and two cats and spends her free time playing games and baking.

Paula Hill

Paula Hill was a Middle/High ELA and Communications educator prior to joining PBS in January 2020. During her time as a classroom educator, she was fortunate to be surrounded by inspiring educators and leaders who motivated, coached, and encouraged her growth and the growth of her students. She found a deep love for curriculum and curriculum development very early on in her teaching career. She transitioned out of the classroom right before the pandemic, and joined the PBS LearningMedia team. As she continues to learn and grow from others, she looks forward to "paying-it forward" by helping her fellow educators and their students achieve success. She recently completed the Google Project Management Career Certificate-a rigorous, hands-on program that covers traditional and Agile project management approaches through the life cycle of a project. She is also a Certified Associate in Project Management, through the Project Management Institute.
