A Workshop for Member Input and Development of the current NCSS Code of Ethics Position Statement

NCSS is revising the current statement on ethics for social studies professionals, and we are inviting members' participation to obtain feedback from the organization. Starratt (2009) defines ethics as “a set of norms that are constructed and chosen by members of a pluralistic, democratic society and that are considered pragmatic norms to guide the conduct of their public lives” (p. 6). Following this thinking, as members of a democratic organization, it is important that the voices of NCSS members are heard in revising the current NCSS Code of Ethics Position Statement which establishes the norms for social studies professionals educators in our nation's schools.

Through democratic interaction, this workshop/seminar will engage NCSS members in a consideration of their own personal ethical framework and moral principles through multiple lenses as we seek feedback and perspectives on the current effort in revising the existing framework for applicable use in teacher education programs, practicing teachers and public understanding. Participants can expect to critically examine and clarify their ethical reasoning, arguments, and perspectives that underlie their educational vision and practice as we all work to produce a statement of ethics that aligns with the purpose and intent of 21 st century social studies education. Areas of discussion include but are not limited to Responsibilities, Authenticity, Presence, Democratic Citizenship, Equity, Justice, Pluralism, Intersectionalities, Function, and Format.
