NCSS is proud to invite all methods professors to a special free professional learning institute this summer!

Our online summer institute, Inquiry and Teaching with Primary Sources to Prepare Students for College, Career, and Civic Lifewill be held on Monday, June 7, 2021. Learn how to construct social studies curriculum inquiries for your pre-service teachers using digital sources from the Library of Congress. Pilot and share in-depth feedback on two online methods texts currently under development: 

  • Using Inquiry to Prepare Students for College, Career, and Civic Life (Elementary K-6 Edition)
  • Using Inquiry to Prepare Students for College, Career, and Civic Life (Secondary 6-12 Edition)

These texts are a project generously supported by the Library of Congress through a Teaching with Primary Sources grant. 

Attendees will:

  • Receive a high-level overview and explore the use of each text under development
  • Learn how to teach social studies inquiry using primary sources from the Library of Congress
  • Create model curriculum inquiries using sections of the draft texts
  • Provide critical insights towards enhancing each text prior to their final online publication in 2022

Scott M. Waring, Ph.D.
Professor and Program Coordinator for the Social Science Education​ ​Program, University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL 

Scott teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in​ social science methodology, research, and theory at the University of Central Florida. He earned his B.S. and M.A. in Education from the​ ​University of South Florida and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Social Studies Education, with​ ​a minor in Instructional Technology. He has won multiple awards, including Excellence in Research, the Excellence in Graduate Teaching,​ ​Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, Excellence in Academic Advising Award, and Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising. Scott has also published a book, multiple journal articles, and book chapters focusing on the teaching and learning of history,​ ​the use of primary sources, and the utilization of technology in teaching. Not only is he an accomplished writer, but he is also an​ ​editor for a number of publications: Social Studies and the Young Learner; Contemporary Issues in Technology and​ ​Teacher Education – Social Studies; Social Studies Research and​ ​Practice; Teaching with Primary Sources Journal. Currently, he serves as Chair for the Teacher Education and Professional Development Committee of the National​ ​Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), Chair of the Florida College and University Faculty Assembly, and​ ​an Executive Board Member for the Florida Council for History Education.

Lawrence M. Paska, Ph.D.
Executive Director, National Council for the Social Studies, Silver Spring, MD

Larry earned a B.A. in History and a M.A.T. in Social Studies from Union College and his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University at Albany. He began his career as a middle school social studies teacher in New York State public schools, has taught social studies education methods at the university level, and holds New York 7–12 social studies education and school district administrator certifications. At the New York State Education Department, he led standards and assessment programs for P-12 social studies education as a state social studies specialist and established the Office of Educational Design and Technology as the Coordinator of Technology Policy. He has also served as the Director of Professional Development for the Southern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), providing instructional programs and services for 32 public school districts in the greater New York City region. He received the New York State Council for the Social Studies' (NYSCSS) Distinguished Social Studies Service Award in 2017 and served as the 2015–2016 NYSCSS President. In addition to his work with NCSS, he serves on the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Board of Directors, the National Coalition for History Policy Board, the National History Day Advisory Council, and the American Archive for Public Broadcasting Education Advisory Committee.
