"Understanding Fake News: What It Is, Why It Works, and What We Can Do About It"

The term "fake news" has become ubiquitous since the 2016 Presidential election; however, its meaning is often dependent on who is using the term. This presentation will discuss the various definitions of fake news and use elements of political psychology to explain why we often succumb to believing actual fake news and discrediting legitimate news that has been branded as fake. Implications for the classroom will also be discussed.
