Getting Social

By Lawrence M. Paska, NCSS Executive Director

(TSSP Jan/Feb 2017) NCSS is beginning the process of implementing its bold vision for future growth through a new Strategic Plan. Our Board of Directors approved the new multi-year Strategic Plan during our 96th Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. in December 2016. The Strategic Plan identifies five Priorities for the future of our organization:

  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Innovation
  • Inclusiveness
  • Influence & Leadership

I have had the privilege of supporting two organizational strategic plans in my career. In each situation, the plan’s success was directly related to the organization’s acknowledgement of the plan’s goals and actions in its daily work. We built internal goals around the plan’s priorities, focused our daily practices around the plan, and (most importantly) invited partners we worked with to share in our plan, give input into is success, and make it part of their own work.

To this end, I started a blog this month called “Getting Social.” My blog will share weekly reflections on our Strategic Plan, our organization, and our social studies profession. This blog is a chronicle of the partners, members, thought leaders, and friends (these are not mutually exclusive groups, by the way!) who make a difference in NCSS as our organization grows its services to advance social studies education. It is also a chronicle of ideas, events, and moments that shape our thinking as social educators. I invite you to catch new blog posts every week on www.socialstudies.org. Look for the link on the right side of the webpage. Comment anytime and let’s start a conversation. Our Strategic Plan will be even stronger with your voice. If you’re interested in how good teaching, learning, and leading come together in the social studies, please join me in “getting social” through NCSS.
