Tina Schuster is the School Redesign, Director of Pedagogy and Innovation and a member of the Center for Love and Justice (C4LJ) team at High Tech High Graduate School of Education. Tina's passion for this work lies in the hope that we, as educators, can create transformative learning experiences for students. After graduating from the University of Virginia, Tina worked in a variety of school settings as both a teacher and coach and taught for two years in the Peace Corps in Namibia. That was a life-changing experience because until the Peace Corps Tina never considered teaching as a career. Since then, Tina has been a K12 teacher, teaching in Fluvanna County (VA), the Dominican Republic, and High Tech High for a total of 17 years. In the classroom, Tina has approached controversial and heavy topics but always tried to bring creativity, fun, and playfulness into the work with students, which remains as important as Tina now works with adults.

Tina will pull from her vast experience designing and implementing liberatory project-based learning with teachers and students to dig into its core components. This session is relevant for K-12 civics educators, and any educator interested in project-based learning strategies that promote rigor and active student engagement.
