In August, 2016, Southwest DeKalb High School lost U.S. History teacher and head football coach Michael Tanks. At the first meeting of the 2016-17 school year, the members of the Southwest DeKalb Chapter of Rho Kappa voted to rename the chapter the Michael Tanks Chapter to honor Coach Tanks. To celebrate his life and the contributions he has made to the Southwest DeKalb community, in May, the members planted two apple trees in the courtyard of the school. A granite tile was engraved and will be placed by the trees to allow future generations of Southwest DeKalb students to know the legacy of Coach Tanks.
