National Council for the Social Studies, in partnership with the Kaur Foundation, proudly presents its annual Virtual Summer Conference! Explore themes of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) at our inaugural summer conference event, JEDI in Social Studies, Thursday-Friday, June 22-23, 2023.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion guide the policies, procedures, and educational practices of NCSS as we engage in collaborative action that values differences and includes underrepresented voices. NCSS seeks to promote a holistic understanding of humanity, cultures, and the world around us. Social studies educators work to enable students’ opportunities to participate in building the world they will live in, analyzing the principle of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion throughout their lives.

Justice sits at the core of social studies education, acting to develop citizens and other members of society who understand how to contribute positively within the school, community, state, nation, and world.

Equity is creating and enacting policies, educational practices, and attitudes that ensure equitable power, access, opportunities, and outcomes for all.

Diversity is the acknowledgment, acceptance, and appreciation of human differences from a broad range of characteristics and traits, including but not limited to race, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, language, religion, (dis)ability, age, national origin, ethnicity, or political perspectives.

Inclusion is shared decision-making by authentically and intentionally welcoming the diversity of human differences to recognize and value everyone’s agency and experiences.

Our first Virtual Summer Conference features speakers and session strands focused on each of these four principles. Our goal is to provide two days of thought leadership, content background, and instructional support to fully engage JEDI throughout social studies learning and teaching. Please join us for a one-of-a-kind summer conference - tailored to your passions in social studies and brought to you at a convenient location: your computer!
