On June 6, 2017, NCSS Executive Director Dr. Lawrence Paska participated in “Promoting Civility and Tolerance in our Schools and Communities,” a meeting convened at the National Press Club by Fernando Reimers, Ford Foundation Professor of Practice in International Education and Faculty Director of International Education Policy, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Anthony Jackson, Vice President of Education, Asia Society, and Charito Kruvant, Founder and Chair, Creative Associates International.
The meeting provided an opportunity for various individuals and groups working in schools and communities to mutually learn from one another and to share knowledge about the extent to which communities and schools are welcoming, valuing and respectful of students from all ethnic, cultural, religious, and gender identity backgrounds, and where all students learn to appreciate our differences as a strength of our communities, democracy, and society.
The resulting dialogue, shared data, and areas of agreement are now available to the public in this Promoting Civility and Tolerance in our Schools and Communities Executive Report. Please feel free to share the report and its recommendations with your networks. The conveners of this meeting understand that it is by engaging others in this conversation that we can begin to curb expressions of hate and intolerance in our schools.
