Tracy Middleton to Join NCSS Board

Tracy Middleton, recently elected to the NCSS Board of Directors, first joined the California Council for the Social Studies as a new teacher, and then joined NCSS. Twelve years later, that “great investment” keeps on giving. Tracy teaches 8th grade social studies at Hidden Valley Middle School in the Escondido Union School District in California where she serves as the district’s social studies expert. A key concern? "We need to make sure civics is a part of our curriculum." (Read more)

Social Studies and the Young Learner: Student Project has a Real-World Impact 

"Walking the (Cross) Walk: A Lesson in Responsible Citizenship, Empowerment, and Pedestrian Safety” grew from a service-learning project initiated by fifth grade students’ concerns about safety. Anna F. Lyon and Gregory Powell led the class in describing the problem with observations and data.
