The Annual Conference Wrap-Up Edition!

President India Meissel Presents Khizr Kahn with the Spirit of America Award.

Khizr Kahn Receives the Spirit of America Award 
NCSS presented Khizr Khan with the Spirt of America Award sponsored by The Social Studies School Service. The award is given to an individual within or outside of the social studies profession who has made a significant or special contribution exemplifying the "American Democratic Spirit." Khan is the author of An American Family: A Memoir of Hope and Sacrifice. In 2016, Khizr and his wife, Ghazala Khan, spoke at the Democratic National Convention about their son, Captain Humayan Khan, a U.S. soldier and Gold Star recipient killed in Iraq. Kahn speaks publicly on the topics of citizenship and family values.

Youth, Social Media & Digital Civic Engagement
A new position statement developed by the NCSS Technology Community and approved by the Board of Directors suggests drawing upon youth's informal personal use of social media and transferring their experiences into formal settings to help students become civically engaged in digital spaces. NCSS Gold and Silver Star Winners Honored at HOD
NCSS recognizes Gold Star and Silver Star Councils during the Annual Conference at the House of Delegates meeting each year. Affiliated Councils are honored for meeting eight to nine criteria (Gold Star) or seven to nine criteria (Silver Star) which include: providing democratic affiliated council elections, workshops and conferences promoting social studies, participating in social studies advocacy, and encouraging NCSS membership. Congratulations to these stellar councils!
