How to Start a Rho Kappa Chapter

How to Start a Rho Kappa Chapter

Step 1. Select an Advisor

A social studies teacher must serve as a chapter advisor. The advisor will need to gather a group of other interested teachers and students to discuss the possibility of forming a chapter.

Advisor Duties

A chapter advisor will:

  • Be responsible for the chapter’s day-to-day activities, act as a supervisor over the chapter, and perform the duties of a liaison among administration, faculty, students, and community members;
  • Coordinate the creation and review of chapter bylaws to execute the national organization’s constitution and outline the chapter’s operating procedures;
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date files that consist of membership lists, financial transactions, chapter history, chapter activities, chapter publications and correspondence, and chapter bylaws;
  • Regularly review each member to ensure membership in good standing as determined by the chapter’s bylaws.
  • Assist the chapter officers to understand and carry out their duties to the best of their abilities.
  • Facilitate communications between the local chapter and the national organization. The chapter advisor is responsible for submitting all membership lists and associated fees along with any other information requested by the Rho Kappa Advisory Council; and
  • Appoint a faculty selection committee assembled at the high school in which the chapter resides to select new members. The selection committee shall consist of the chapter advisor and other faculty members within the school. Membership is based upon academic achievement in courses within the field of social studies as well as overall academic GPA.

Step 2. Complete a New Charter Application

The advisor must submit a $150 charter fee and a charter application to officially secure a charter. A formal charter is sent to the attention of the chapter advisor at the school address.

Note: Credit Card purchases will be processed within 2-3 Days. Purchase orders can take up to 8 weeks. Please keep this in mind when planning your chapter’s induction ceremony.

Step 3. Induct Members

Members can be inducted once a chapter advisor has received its charter. Rho Kappa members always represent their community in a positive and suitable manner. Criteria can be found here: Selecting and Inducting Members

Chapters must possess a charter, be active, and compliant with national requirements to induct students. Once members are selected and all qualifications for the chapter are met, Rho Kappa chapter advisors can hold an induction ceremony.

Rho Kappa students are officially inducted into Rho Kappa when presented with a Rho Kappa Induction Certificate. These certificates are available in the Rho Kappa store for $6. Purchasing a Rho Kappa Induction Certificate also supports the Rho Kappa Scholarship Fund, which offers a scholarship towards College or University education.

*Before applying for a charter and beginning the process, all schools must get approval from their corresponding state Department of Education or an accrediting agency.
