4 Steps to Scheduling Your Meetings with Congressional Offices

4 Steps to Scheduling Your Meetings with Congressional Offices

STEP 1:

If you don’t already know who your Senators and Representatives are, go to the Senate and House websites:

  • Senate www.senate.gov -- look up your Senators by state
  • House  www.house.gov  -- enter your zip code to find your Representative.

STEP 2:

Contact your Congressional offices to find out the name and e-mail address of the legislative assistant who handles education policy issues.

  • call the DC phone number and ask for the name of the legislative assistant who handles education policy issues.
  • Ask for the staffer’s e-mail address, which is the best way to contact and stay in touch with staffers on the Hill.

To find the phone number of your Senator’s Offices, visit: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

To find the phone number of your Representative’s Office visit: http://www.house.gov/representatives/

STEP 3:

To set up a meeting with a legislative assistant handling education policy, e-mail the legislative assistant (or leave a voice mail message) requesting a meeting for December 1st, say:

  • that you are a constituent who will be in Washington DC for the day on December 1st and would like to make an appointment.
  • Request a meeting that would start no earlier than 12:30pm and no later than 3:30pm.
  • Whenever possible, coordinate with other Legislative Day attendees in your state so that we don’t have multiple separate requests being submitted. Coordinating meetings in this manner will:
    • increase our chances of getting a meeting with the member of Congress; and
    • will convey that we are a professional group that is well organized and respectful of the member or their staff’s time.
  • A list of any other same state/district Legislative Day participants will be made available to Legislative Day registrants with once a week updates.

We are 3 weeks before the Legislative Day event, therefore we recommend you try to schedule your meetings with the legislative assistant that handles education policy issues rather than with the member of Congress.

STEP 4:

Once you receive confirmation of your appointments please let the NCSS Office know by contacting Ana Post at apost@ncss.org.
