As the new school year gets into full swing, the Library of Congress will bring teachers and education experts from across the nation together in its second annual online conference for educators. This free two-day event, “Discover and Explore with Library of Congress Primary Sources,” will be held October 25-26, 2016, from 4-8 p.m. EDT and will be open to K-12 educators from across all teaching disciplines. A scholarship contest designed to facilitate global learning inside and outside of the classroom is now open to all students in grades 8-12. For the third consecutive year, AFS-USA has sponsored Project: Change, a contest that prompts students to analyze global issues and then submit their ideas for a volunteer project that could have a meaningful impact in one of eleven target countries. By participating in this critical thinking exercise, students both learn about the issues affecting global communities and employ 21st century skills to develop strategies for creating a better world. Seeing the world with GEEO, educators can earn professional development credits and optional graduate credit. GEEO's trips are 7 to 21 days in length and are designed and discounted to be interesting and affordable for teachers. Many of the programs are accompanied by university faculty that are experts on the destination. GEEO also provides teachers educational materials and the structure to help them bring their experiences into the classroom. The Mary K. Bonsteel Tachau Teacher of the Year Award is given annually by the Organization of American Historians (OAH) in recognition of the contributions made by precollegiate teachers to improve history education within the field of American history. The award, to be given for activities which enhance the intellectual development of other history teachers and/or students, memorializes the career of Mary K. Bonsteel Tachau, University of Louisville, for her pathbreaking efforts to build bridges between university and K-12 history teachers. Read more
The National Humanities Center’s (NHC’s) work in education and outreach aims to lbuild a deeper understanding of best practices in teaching and learning in the K-16 classroom.
Each week starting in October, the America in Class webinar series with will introduce a leading scholar to discuss and share insights on a compelling topic in the humanities. Supported with text recommendations and primary source collections, each session also identifies inquiry-based strategies for introducing these concepts to younger students. Read more
The American Psychological Association (APA) is pleased to announce the first-ever APA Summit on High School Psychology Education, which will take place July 9-14, 2017, at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. The goal of the summit is to strengthen the value, delivery, assessment, and reach of psychological science through the teaching of high school psychology. In a high school psychology course, students gain an understanding of the complexities and diversity of human thought and behavior. Enrollment numbers in high school psychology courses are strong and growing. Read more

Plan ahead, and apply now. In July 2017, a select group of 18 educators will follow in the footsteps of history as they visit World War II historic sites and American cemeteries in San Francisco, California; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Manila, The Philippines.
A partnership -- National History Day, American Battle Monuments Commission, Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs -- hopes to reinvigorate the teaching of World War II in middle and high school by helping teachers understand the sacrifice of fallen American heroes of that era. The National Humanities Center will be hosting a hands-on training in the use of GIS technology in the middle and secondary classroom. Mapping the American Experience is a collaboration between the National Humanities Center and central North Carolina school districts to create professional development training for educators on the use of GIS technology in K-12 teaching and scholarship.
