Education Report October 9, 2009

1. Budget and Appropriations
-Congress inched a little closer to completing work on the FY 2010 budget this week. An agriculture spending bill was passed and sent to the President for his signature.
-In the Senate, however, things continue to move slowly as there has been no mention of the Senate taking up the four remaining spending measures, one of which is the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education spending bill.
-The debate over healthcare has perplexed education advocates on how it will intersect with the $87 billion reconciliation bill known as the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act.

2. Afterschool Alliance Holds Discussion on American After 3PM
-This was an event held last Tuesday at the Department of Education to kick-off the 10th annual Lights On Afterschool (LOA).
-The focal point of the event was the release of new data from a survey conducted by the Afterschool Alliance, America After 3PM.
It concluded that the number of students who participate and need afterschool programs has increased significantly.
