Statement of Purpose
Theory & Research in Social Education is designed to stimulate and communicate systematic research and thinking in social education. Its purpose is to foster the creation and exchange of ideas and research findings that will expand knowledge and understanding of the purpose, conditions, and effects of schooling and education about society and social relations. Manuscripts reporting conceptual or empirical studies of social education are welcomed.
Submission of Manuscripts
Theory & Research in Social Education receives all manuscript submissions electronically via its ScholarOne Manuscripts site located at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/utrs [1]. ScholarOne Manuscripts allows for rapid submission of original and revised manuscripts, as well as facilitating the review process and internal communication between authors, editors and reviewers via a web-based platform. ScholarOne Manuscripts technical support can be accessed via http://scholarone.com/services/support/ [2]. If you have any other requests please contact Patricia Avery, the journal’s editor, at avery001@umn.edu [3].
Manuscripts are accepted for consideration with the understanding that they are original material and are not being considered for publication elsewhere. Authors are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the College and University Faculty Assembly of National Council for the Social Studies (CUFA). As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of CUFA.
Specifications for Manuscripts
All material submitted for publication must conform to the style of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed., 2010). Manuscripts should be double-spaced, with 1-inch margins on all sides. All manuscripts should be sent with an abstract of 100-150 words. The first text page of the article should have the complete title, but no list of the authors. Subsequent pages should carry only a running head. Subheads should be used at reasonable intervals to break the monotony of lengthy texts. Abbreviations and acronyms should be spelled out at first mention unless found as entries in their abbreviated form in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition. Pages should be numbered consecutively. Manuscripts should typically run between 25-35 typed pages. The text of manuscripts should not exceed 10,000 words (excluding abstract, appendices, notes, reference list, and tables/charts).
Author Identification
The complete title of the manuscript and the name(s) of the author(s) should be typed on a separate sheet to assure anonymity in the review process. The first-named author or the corresponding author should submit a complete address, telephone number and electronic mail address.
Notes and References
Footnotes are explanations or amplifications of textual material. They are distracting to readers and expensive to set and should be avoided whenever possible. When they must occur, they should be typed on a separate sheet and numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript. A reference list contains only those references cited in the text. Their accuracy and completeness are the responsibility of the author(s).
Illustrations
Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines: 300 dpi or higher; sized to fit on journal page; EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only; submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files.
Color Reproduction
Color art will be reproduced in color in the online publication at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if print reproduction costs are paid. Print rates: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.
Tables and Figures
Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet.
Review Process
Manuscripts will be acknowledged by the editor upon receipt. Following preliminary editorial review, manuscripts will be sent to reviewers who have expertise in the subject of the article. The review process takes approximately three months. Authors should expect to hear from the editor within that time regarding the status of their manuscript. Theory and Research in Social Education uses the blind review system. The names of referees are published annually in the fall issue of the journal.
Right to Reply
The right to reply policy encourages comments on recently published articles in Theory and Research in Social Education. They are, of course, subject to the same editorial review and decision. If the comment is accepted for publication, the editor shall inform the author of the original article. If the author submits a reply to the comments, the reply is also subject to editorial review and decision. The editor may allot a specific amount of journal space for the comment (ordinarily about 1,500 words) and for the reply (ordinarily about 750 words). The reply may appear in the same issue as the comment or in a later issue.
Media Reviews
Media reviews are normally solicited, however, unsolicited reviews will be considered for publication. Authors should send a Word version of the review by email to Todd Kenreich at tkenreich@towson.edu [4]. The length may vary from 500 to 3,500 words. The format for the top of the first page is as follows:
Books: Author (last name first). Date of publication (in parentheses). Title (in italics). City of publication: Publisher, total number of pages, list price (for both hard and softcover, if available). ISBN number.

Each of the above should be followed by: Reviewer's name (in capital letters), followed by institutional address, complete with postal code.
