Good News From California: AJR 64 Legislation Supports Social Studies

Officers and members of the California CSS convened, in the company of State Assemblyman Gene Mullin, to voice their concerns about the narrowing of the curriculum and to advocate for the inclusion of the social studies during the annual CACSS conference in the spring.

Their efforts culminated in Assemblyman Mullin's recent introduction of Assembly Joint Resolution No. 64, which encourages Congress to recognize the importance of broadening the curriculum and to entertain "alternatives for including all subjects in the assessment and accountability system" during the reauthorization of ESEA.

NCSS hopes that affiliate councils across the country will follow the CACSS' example of promoting, and that legislators will follow Assemblyman Mullin's example of recognizing, the importance of the social studies in state and national policy.

We applaud them both!
