This Week in Washington, a weekly publication of WPLLC, provides an overview of upcoming events in Washington D.C. affecting American Education. Be sure to direct your attention to the following "Bills to Watch" of particular interest to NCSS in the attached report:
- The Strengthening Communities Through Education and Integration Act (S. 3334):
A bill to strengthen communities through English literacy, civic education, and immigrant integration sponsored by Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY), as well as its House companion H.R. 6617 sponsored by Representative Michael Honda (D-CA). - The American History and Civics Achievement Act (H.R. 6525), sponsored by Representative Betty McCollum of Minnesota, which would amend the National Assessment of Educational Progress Authorization Act to require NAEP to conduct trial state academic assessments in U.S. history and civics in grades 8 and 12 in at least 10 states.
Please note that since the focus of congressional activities has shifted outside the "beltway" during this recess period, This Week in Washington will not be published again until September.
