Back to School

Lots of us became teachers because we loved school.

On Long Island we went back the day after Labor Day, in new fall clothes that were too warm for Indian summer, but of course we had to wear them because they were new. We had reinforcements pasted onto our notebook pages and sharpened yellow Number Two pencils. We could hardly sleep the night before.
Would our friends be in the same classes with us?
Would we like our teachers?
Do we have to wear a gym uniform?

As educators ourselves, the beginning of school has an equivalent excitement. But as we stare at our planning books and curriculum outlines, our thoughts are deeper and more reflective.   read more »


NBPTS announces its public review period for the Social Studies-History Standards

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) announces its public review period for the Social Studies-History Standards. The standards were developed by a committee of educators from the social studies/history field. Practicing classroom teachers fill a majority of seats on standards committees with other members representing districts, states and higher education.

NCSS JOURNALS WIN AEP AWARDS !

AEPlogoSmall.jpgThe Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) has awarded NCSS two of AEP’s "best of the year" awards for periodical publications in 2008.

The September/October 2008 issue of Social Studies and the Young Learner was judged the best anniversary or commemorative issue of a journal for educators to have been published in 2008. This was the special 20th anniversary issue of the Young Learner, published in September-October 2008. The journal, which is edited by Professor Linda Bennett of the University of Missouri-Columbia, promotes creative teaching in grades K-6.

Read one of the articles in this issue—“Teachers Who Shaped Our Lives” by Andrea Libresco (Attached below). The rest of the issue is available on the members-only website.

Social Education’s Research and Practice column was judged the best column or department of the year to have been published in a periodical for educators in 2008. This column, whose editor is Professor Walter Parker of the University of Washington, highlights educational research that is relevant for classroom teaching.
