Legacy Essay Contest
Submissions are now being accepted for the Legacy Essay Contest. The Legacy Essay Contest is a partnership of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), the National Education Association (NEA), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, and Karz Productions.
The Legacy Essay Contest is part of the Legacy and Lessons Project, which includes the Legacy Lesson Plan and the PBS Legacy documentary, featuring screenings with panel discussions at high schools, colleges, and universities across the country that are being presented by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and the National Council of Negro Women.
The aim of the Legacy and Lessons project is to dramatize the relevance of history for addressing current social and political challenges. The aim is also to clarify the legacy that made the election of our first African-American president possible and to foster mutual understanding and respect.
Students of all races and ethnicities are encouraged to participate.
The deadline for essay submissions is December 15, 2009.
