Education Report May 28, 2010

1. Budget and Appropriations
-All week the Senate was hard at work trying to move an emergency supplemental spending bill along. The $56.6 billion emergency spending bill passed the Senate on thursday evening--Without Harkin's Jobs for education bill.
-On the House side of the Capitol, the news that a considerably larger emergency spending bill was in the works was a little more promising for education advocates. A mid-week press conference brought together a number of education stakeholders who tried to make the case for including the Education Jobs bill in the emergency spending package. The emergency supplemental bill was one of many bills that fell victim to House disarray over spending.
-It was announced that the Senate intends to debate a budget resolution for FY2011 in early June. This is good news as this made clear that funding for education would be a priority in FY 2011 when all other federal spending will be frozen.
