NCSS Leaders Legislative Day Lodging Forms Due

This year's conference in Washington D.C. provides a unique opportunity for you and as many other NCSS leaders and members to come together in the Nation's capital for a not-to-be-missed opportunity to reach our members of Congress and flex our social studies muscle! In light of pending appropriations legislation and the re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), NCSS is focusing its resources on making Thursday, December 1 an all-day Legislative Day event that will include a morning orientation, time to meet with your members of Congress in the late morning and early afternoon and an important debriefing and info dissemination strategies in the afternoon. A tentative schedule is listed at the end of this message.

To facilitate the participation of affiliated council leaders, NCSS is glad to cover Wednesday night's stay at the Grand Hyatt Washington, 1000 H Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20001 for two council-designated participants. Please read the forms carefully, due to financial constraints, certain restrictions apply.

  • Please disregard the information that appeared in the Conference Preview regarding the additional sessions that would take place on Thursday afternoon. In order to make this an impactful a day for social studies, we will be focusing all our energies on legislative visits.

All NCSS Members, State and local Affiliates, Associated Group, and Community Leaders – Join Us!

This year's conference in Washington D.C. provides a unique opportunity to bring the membership of NCSS together in the nation's capitol. This year, in light of the pending reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), we invite our members to advocate for the profession during a NCSS Legislative Day on Capitol Hill. We will be briefing and debriefing all participants before and after their Senator/Representative visits at the Capitol. We hope you will be able to join us!

  • Pre-Capitol Briefing
    8:00 – 9:00 am, [Room, Venue]
    Learn the best strategies to becoming an effective social studies advocate! Gain an understanding of how to connect local and national issues that U.S. Congressional Leaders care about in your talking points, to the key aspects in developing ongoing relationships that will make you a trusted source of information and feedback regarding the effect of national policies on local issues. All NCSS leaders and registered conference attendees are welcome.

  • Hill Visits!
    10:00 AM to 2:30 PM
    Schedule your Hill visits and personalize your talking points head of time, and after the morning orientation, head out to your meetings!

  • Legislative Day Debrief
    3:00 – 4:00 pm, [Room, Venue]
    Social Studies advocacy doesn't have to stop on the steps of the capitol! Join your colleagues in debriefing from your Hill visits and discussing strategies for next steps and information dissemination. All NCSS leaders and registered conference attendees are welcome.
