Conference Updates

Henry Louis Gates unable to speak at conference

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has canceled his scheduled speaking engagement on Friday, November 21 at the NCSS Annual Conference. Dr. Gates will be traveling abroad on behalf of Harvard University, though he will appear on Thursday, November 20 as part of the College and University Faculty Assembly (CUFA) annual meeting.

Jose Antonio Vargas will serve as the keynote speaker on Friday at 11:15AM.


Nicholas Kristof added as keynote speaker

New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Nicholas Kristof is the latest speaker added to the lineup for the 2014 NCSS Annual Conference. Mr. Kristof, co-author (with his wife and 2012 conference speaker Sheryl WuDunn) of the forthcoming book A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity, will speak on Saturday afternoon, November 22, sharing his discoveries in researching this book and showing clips of the PBS series, airing in January.

Sheraton Boston Unveils Multi-Million Dollar Renovation

Last month, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts announced the completion of an extensive multi-million dollar renovation of the Sheraton Boston Hotel, headquarters hotel for the NCSS Annual Conference. The hotel now showcases 450 deluxe guest rooms in addition to enhancements to the public areas of the hotel, most notably a new look for the hotel restaurant—Café Apropos and a new spa Green Tangerine. Randi Weingarten to speak at President's Breakfast

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, will be the featured speaker at the President’s Breakfast, on Friday, November 21. Ms. Weingarten, who has served as AFT president since 2008, is a strong advocate of educator-driven public school reform and of the civic mission of schools, making her a strong choice to open the conference, with its theme, “Let Freedom Ring: The Civic Mission of Schools.”   --> read more »

A message from Boston Public Schools concerning its History and Social Studies Department

John McDonough, Interim Superintendent of Boston Public Schools, issued a statement regarding the rumors that BPS was eliminating its History and Social Studies Department. You can read the statement here.
