Prince George’s schools ask state to waive four instructional days because of snow

The Prince George’s County Public School System has asked for a state waiver of four instructional days lost to inclement weather this winter.

Maryland requires students to attend school 180 days during a school calendar year. So far, Prince George’s has canceled classes eight times for snowy weather.

Inspired by Vanilla Ice, Jefferson Academy gets pumped for city tests

It’s D.C. CAS time, and Jefferson Academy has done it again.

Last spring in the runup to the city’s springtime standardized test, students at the Southwest D.C. middle school spent countless hours working after class with seventh-grade math teacher Greg Dohmann to produce “Rock that CAS,” an unforgettable music video parody of “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore.

For abused children in Fairfax, a new place to stay

Fairfax County child protective services received more than 2,300 referrals of child abuse in 2013. Soon, youths in the county who need a way to escape harm at home will have a new place to stay.

On April 2, the doors will officially open at the SafeSpot Children’s Advocacy Center located at 3913 Old Lee Highway in Suite 81-C.

In his tweet, Duncan linked to a U.S. News & World Report story examining the early hours of the high school day and wrote: “Would love to see more districts consider later starting times, particularly for high school students.”
