About this site

Welcome to the new socialstudies.org!

We hope that you will find this new site valuable as you strive to educate effective citizens. On this page, we'll highlight some of the new features as well as what's changed.

We appreciate your feedback on the new site and its design. Please send your comments or constructive criticism to webmaster@ncss.org.

Page Changes
Our new site is dynamic--this means that the pages are generated as you request them. Therefore, any bookmarks that you may have saved are likely to be invalid. If you encounter errors when trying to access an old page that you have bookmarked, check our Site Map to find it. (You can access the site map by clicking the site map link at the bottom of any page, or go directly to http://www.socialstudies.org/sitemap/)
Generally speaking, you should still be able to access most pages you're used to by deleting the last part of the URL: for example, if you previously used http://www.socialstudies.org/standards/stitle.shtml, you should now use http://www.socialstudies.org/standards/.

Accessibility
As part of the redesign, we are striving to make our site more friendly to those visitors with disabilities. For example, we provide text-based navigation at the bottom of every page, as well as alternative text for images.
We have taken steps to ensure better compatibility with alternative browsers, but we're not infallible. Please contact the webmaster with any issues, problems, or suggestions on how we can improve accessibility.

Site Layout
Our new site has fewer sections than the old. We hope this will help you find the information you need in a more intuitive way. The sections are:

  • About NCSS: This section contains information about the organization, such as what we do, media information, position statements, and special projects.

  • Your Classroom: This section is filled with information you can use in your classroom, from resources and lesson plans to curriculum standards.

  • Your Profession: In this area, you'll find information you can use to strengthen your career as an educator. Pages here include professional development listings, teacher standards, awards and grants, and our annual conference.

  • Advocacy: This section features ways to advocate social studies and keep up to date with news and information about education.

  • Membership: Visit this section to learn more about NCSS Membership, join online, and access our members only area.

  • Community: This is the place to connect to other educators, from local and state social studies councils to professional subgroups.

  • Publications: In this area, you'll learn about NCSS publications, from journals to books.

E-mail Bulletins
You're invited to "subscribe" to our e-mail bulletins. By becoming a subscriber, you'll receive periodic information highlighting new projects, news, and other items of interest to social studies educators. In future, we will create additional features for subscribers. To subscribe, click the "subscribe" link on the left side menu of any page.
When you subscribe to our website, NCSS will never divulge your e-mail address to any other organization for any reason.
Please note: the subscribe log in is a different system than our Members Only system.

NCSS Member Services
NCSS Members may access additional content such as journal articles and resources; as well as make membership changes like address or other information. To enter the NCSS Member Services system, click "Membership" at the top of any page.
The NCSS Member Services system requires a different log in and password than the e-mail bulletin system.

News Feeds
Users familiar with the RSS news feed format will find syndication links in our resources, professional development, and legislative update sections. These news feeds will keep you up to date without having to re-load web pages.

Printer-Friendly Pages
This new feature, located at the bottom of the left-side menu of every page, allows you to print our web pages without the menus.

E-Mail a Colleague
This new feature, again located on the left-side menu, will send a copy of the current page to an e-mail address you specify.

Where is NCSS DataBank?
Our DataBank respository of resources and professional development is now closed. All future content will be located here on one site. Any content of DataBank that was current and useful has been migrated to this new site.
